SCIENCE - Physical Science
Teacher: Miss Catherine Morrison
Prerequisites: None
Description: Physical Science is a ninth-grade survey course providing a foundation in physics and chemistry as preparation for more advanced high-school science courses. This course gives an overview of matter and measurements and then delves into the physics concepts of mechanics, kinematics, dynamics, energy, work, simple machines, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, periodic motion and waves, sound, electromagnetic energy and light and optics. In the final quarter of the class, chemistry concepts of the atom, elements and the periodic table, bonding and compounds, chemical reactions, mixtures and solutions, and acids bases and salts are explored. Whenever possible, hands on experiments are conducted. Thoughout the course, historical and social perspectives for scientific knowledge are explored which inspires studenst to see the process, relevancy and usefulness of science as a Christian endevor. Many Christians incorrectly view physics, chemistry and mathematics as spiritually neutral because it is difficult to find obvious theological connections with these subjects. This course seeks to help students learn that they can glorify God and love their neighbor with Physical Science.
SCIENCE - Biology
Teacher: Mr. Tad Casserly
Prerequisite: Physical Science
Description: Students will have the opportunity to explore the living portion of the earth that was created by our God. A close look at the sciences and how they can be approached with the understanding of an all powerful Creator who is the source of all that we see and experience. Beginning with developing microscope techniques, an introduction to cell theory, structure and function of organelles, cellular processes with some basic chemistry of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, ATP, RNA and DNA will be investigated. DNA replication, mitosis, meiosis, and Genetics are the keys to the continuity of life for all species and will be studied. Biblical creation will be examined and evidence to refute evolution will be presented. The taxonomic system of living things will be investigated by the students. The species and its relation to the Biblical kind will also be examined. An extensive survey of all of the kingdoms with relevant characteristics will follow the study of classification.
SCIENCE - Chemistry
Teacher: Mr. Tad Casserly
Prerequisites: Physical Science & Biology
Description: Chemistry is the study of matter and changes in matter. God's creation is organized on an amazingly small scale! This course explores atoms and molecules as the building blocks of elements, compounds and mixtures. Properties of sub-atomic particles, their arrangement and the influence that they have on chemical reactions and bonding will be considered. History of the development of understanding atomic theory, the periodic table, acids and bases and the kinetic theory of matter will be investigated. The four categories of reactions, naming compounds, writing formulas, balancing equations and mole relationships are a major part of the language of chemistry. Because God's creation displays mathematical patterns, some math is used as a tool to understand how atoms and molecules behave, how they combine in specific proportions and how the products of chemical reactions can be predicted both quantitatively and qualitatively. In addition a brief exploration of nuclear reactions will be explored. Hands-on activities are used whenever possible.
SCIENCE - Physics
Teacher: Mr. Tad Casserly
Prerequisites: Physical Science, Biology & Chemistry
Description: Physics is the study of how God makes matter and energy interact, aside from the chemical interactions studied in chemistry. The fundamental concept of physics is motion. Whether it is the motion of electrons through an electrical circuit or the acceleration of a falling object, physics explains that motion through measurable and observable means. This course explores Newtonian mechanics (i.e., topics like how things move, changes in motion, momentum, harmonic motion, and gravity), wave mechanics, sound, light, electricity and magnetism. Because God's creation displays mathematical patterns, math is regularly used as a tool to understand how objects behave. Hands-on activities are used whenever possible.
