Elective - LIFE APPLICATIONS
Prerequisite: None
Teacher: Tim Brinkerhoff
Text: Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey
Description: This elective course is designed to help the student be fiscally wise with the money that God has blessed him with. As the Bible reminds us, money is very powerful and has the capacity of doing great things for the glory of God or literally destroying someone’s life over night. This course is intended to be very practical in order to help students make wise decisions early on in their lives with how they will choose to manage their money. World-renowned money guru Dave Ramsey provides the foundation for this class with his material entitled Foundations in Personal Finance—a school curriculum from Financial Peace. It covers topics like: saving, wealth building, college saving, investment options, spending strategies, needs vs. wants, the dangers of debt, information on credit bureaus and collection practices, how to budget, bargain shopping, career choices, taxes, insurance information, real estate and mortgage tips, etc. The Christian student is called to be counter-culture within a day and age where people live for making money in order to buy happiness; in this class the student is given the practical tools to live a life of financial stewardship that ultimately glorifies God.
Elective - PSYCHOLOGY
Prerequisite: None
Teacher: Tim Brinkerhoff
Text: Homeschool Psych by Tim Rice
Description: This elective class is intended to be an introductory course to the basics within the field of psychology. The purpose is two-fold: first, to expose the student to a variety of secular and contemporary models of counseling that have risen to the top of popularity within our culture. The distinctives unique to each model are then examined and critiqued in light of the worldview of the originator of the theory and then compared to the timeless truths of the Christian world and life view as they’re found in the Bible. Second, the student is introduced to a distinctly biblical model of counseling taken from CCEF (Christian Counseling Education Foundation) & WTS (Westminster Theological Seminary)—the “birthplace” of nouthetic counseling which was originated by Jay Adams back in the 1960’s. This distinctly Christian model was further developed by Dr. Paul Tripp and pivots on four key areas: Love, Know, Speak, Do. The goal of this class is to have each student first, understand that all counselors and psychologists are not the same but are strongly influenced by their worldview; and then second, realize that as they practice the Love, Know, Speak, Do model, they can not only be an immense blessing to others but even counsel themselves to grow in their spiritual walk with the Lord.
Elective - SPEECH
Prerequisite: None
Teacher: Tim Brinkerhoff
Text: Sound Speech by Terri L. Koontz
Description: As image-bearers of God we human beings have been created with the unique ability to speak and communicate. Within God’s orchestration, He has chosen to use teaching, preaching, training, instruction, correction, education, and many other varied means of formal verbal information exchange as the primary means for advancing His kingdom. In the Scriptures we’re called to “go and tell” others about Jesus Christ as well as be prepared to give a defense for what we believe. Effective communication must be taught. In this class the student is given numerous opportunities to give public presentations in order to sharpen their skills as well as become more comfortable with public speaking. The student is given much freedom to choose what they might like to speak on as long as it’s within the perimeters of the assignment which range from: a favorite story speech, to a persuasive speech, to a demonstration speech, to even picking out a specific passage of Scripture and speaking on that. Each speech is critiqued for content and presentation immediately after it’s been given which is done by fellow classmates and the teacher with the set goal of “encouraging one another” and “building one another up” in the Lord even when it may involve some degree of constructive criticism. As each student is stretched to go beyond their comfort zone, they are encouraged to overcome their fears by seeking to rely on the Lord for their inner peace and words so they might become a more useful communicator of the truth of God’s Word.
