ENGLISH 1 - World Literature 9

Description: English 9 is a college preparatory course in World Literature with a concentration in oral and written communication skills. The focus of the course is on the student’s development of critical reading skills and analytical review of ancient and current topics pertaining to the literary material; the development and creative use of language in oral and written formats; and the development of student aptitude for presenting thorough and comprehensive discussions on such topics while incorporating a Biblical worldview to all.
ENGLISH 2 - American Literature 10

Description: English 10 is a college preparatory course in American Literature designed to acquaint students with major American authors from the colonial period to the twentieth century. Students will analyze style, theme, and character in each work in light of the Christian perspective. The central purpose of the course is to study American literature within its historical context while examining the influence of Christianity in American literature and culture, and to respond to these findings both orally and in writing from a Christian worldview using scripture. Communication skills are broadened to include "timed" writings in order to prepare for the standardized tests necessary for college admission. Concentration on critically analyzing literature, creating, and defending a thesis statement, refining writing skills are at the center of this course. All topics are taught within a Biblical worldview.
ENGLISH 3 - British Literature 11

Description: English 11 is a college preparatory course in British literature and writing designed to acquaint students with the great masters of English literature, from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present, and to develop their analytical skills in reading. Writing skills are polished, with more attention paid to clear and logical expression. Composition assignments prepare the students for college writing and will stress the expository and persuasive essay styles. Writing assignments focus on the art of writing a strong, concise thesis statement and the development of stating, defending, and supporting a positional argument, based on prior knowledge, and research skills through a godly, academic approach. Students refine MLA formatting skills in preparation for college course work. Students will develop oral debating skills through practice and critique.
ENGLISH 4 - World Literature & Composition 12

English 12 is a college preparatory course in analytical reading and expository writing designed to prepare seniors to become active, discerning readers and writers who develop critical analysis skills necessary for a variety of academic disciplines. Students are introduced to literature from the Middle-Ages to the Postmodern Period for purposes of discussion and as a springboard for analytical essay writing from a biblical perspective. Students focus on drafting and revising essays with specific detail to style, structure, and technique. Concentration on MLA formatting skills prepares students for college coursework.
Elective - Creative Writing

Description: The purpose of this course is to develop and expand the student’s imaginative writing processes and understand the human experience both historically and presently through reading and creative writing. Students learn how the foundation for creative writing is Biblically inspired and created. The course includes identifying elements of writing and developing skills and techniques for creative writing in poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Students gain a sound understanding of the elements of a poem and poetic techniques. Students get an understanding of the elements of fiction and apply this understanding to their own written creations. Students contribute select pieces to Illumine, VERITAS’s Literary and Arts Magazine (2011). Students will participate in “rough-draft workshops”, during which their writings will be read, discussed, proofread, and critiqued by fellow classmates and the teacher. This course will enable students to read with a critical eye and expose them to constructive criticism through peer interaction. Most importantly, this class will cultivate within them an aesthetic appreciation for the beauty of language as set forth in example by our Creator through his Word, the Bible.
